east of the sutter buttes

May 24
morning near the Sutter Buttes - Pennington Road
a little lost but okay

breezy cloudy w/sun breaking through - comfortable & a little humid

Found the place: Gray Lodge Wildlife Area
but not the people I was meeting - well, I won't waste the trip nor too much time looking for people when I came to shoot - maybe I'll find them as I wander -

Wandering leads me down a path to what I think is a fruiting Mulberry tree, which already has a poem written for it -

Wandering takes me back down the path - with a big jack rabbit trotting down the path headed straight for me. I slow & try not to scare him but he's having none of it & vanishes into the bullrushes.

I find a couple fellow photographers - we set off on the official trail together...

May 9, 06
midday
Miller Park on the Sacramento River

At last a chance to see some of my painter friends on a paint out day -

warm, clear skies, a little breezy - perfect weather

The river is still very high from the late winter & early spring storms. Snowpack this year is nearly twice that of normal - no drought this year.

Giant old poplars lean out over the water.

High water marks leave the trees bleached from earlier flooding.

east sac garden

May 3, 06
10 a.m.
Gann garden, East Sac
clear, sunny, warm but a cool breeze

Coming back to earlier light in this garden - and a few more flowers. Joan says there's more to come before the tour in another week and a half.

The canopy overhead catches my eye. This garden is protected by tall hedges and trees on three sides - the walls of the outside room. I sit and wait a little while for the sun to move and change the light - sometimes I can actually see the pollen floating in the air and soon my nostrils confirm it with a small sneezing fit. Flying creatures visit: a humming bird, a swallowtail, a huge black crow.

11ish
Beverly Lamb's garden
weather is staying nice

Alistair the Westie is good company and warns off any would-be intruding squirrels.

I sit and look at the garden, trying to really let it soak in. Seeing takes time - I think others have said it before but it's quite true.

Alistair leaves then comes back, plays in water and mud a bit and then comes to see what I'm up to. I sit and watch the light move across the garden some more.

april gardens

April 18, 06
morning in the Cohn garden, East Sac

The sound of water falling over rocks provides a soothing background and a light breeze plays a Japanese styled wind chime. A little bird calls from a corner of the yard.

I wander a bit, soaking in the sun and the garden. A woodpecker drums out a quick set of notes. The fish pond with the big koi beckons me and I spend quite some time just watching, then trying to capture fish on film.

Diane is the one who first greets me and lets me in - she tells me how their little dog Maddie likes to herd the fish around in the pond - at one point Maddie looks ready to jump right in.

Diane also tells me about how all of this land (they have a full acre here) once belonged to a man with ties to the local paper and how he helped with the planting of trees at the state capital, so he planted his own trees on this land at the same time. The huge old redwoods that shade much of this garden are part of his plantings.

Diane's husband, Mark, comes out to introduce himself and make sure his fish are being cooperative, which I assure him they are, but that they are also smart enough to know that I'm not the one who feeds them and are appropriately cautious.

I wait and watch the sunlight move across the yard, seeing how it changes what it touches. It's getting warmer today - the skies are clear and it feels so much better than all the recent rain.

afternoon -
Gann residence, the next stop on my garden tour.

Lovely tudor style house and garden in deep shade out back - a huge old sycamore stands sentry in front.

Squirrels race through more tall redwoods in a neighbor's yard - Joan tells me that she'll be bringing in more and larger impatiens in the next couple weeks - so we agree that I'll return then.

A mourning dove coo's softly nearby, Joan's husband tells me there's a pair nesting in the small pine tree next to the back door. The garden is in deep cool shade right now, just the way a garden should be when Sacramento's summer hits. I figure by looking at where the sun is that the mornings are more well lit, so I'll be back in the morningtime.

A little later -
at the Kastanis garden -

The warm sun releases the sweet scent of orange blossoms just beginning to open and drop. Terry says they'll drop through June.

Trickling water and the tiny tinkle of wind chimes accompany the orange blossoms scent - the warm sunlight moves at an amazing rate as I watch the light play across the peaceful garden.

Last stop of the day -
Beverly Lamb's garden, complete with Bev watering and a little muddy.

The dogwood out front is in full bloom, proclaiming spring is truly here.

Bev's garden is another that has not quite hit it's stride yet - I'll be back -

park of dreams

April 7, 06
afternoon
Antelope Community Park
"Park of Dreams"
69*

It's been raining for weeks with very little breaks in between storms - finally a little longer break of about a day and a half and I get a chance to get out and shoot and soak up some sun at the last minute. When I first arrive clouds are puffy & white with blue sky between and sun to warm in. Birds sing in great chorus in the old valley oaks - scatter to hide when a redtail hawk comes in close & low - but never stop singing.

The wind begins to pick ups a little and a grey storm threatens to the west. Plenty of people with dogs and children are playing & out - everyone seems to know that the sunshine won't be here long and to enjoy it while we have it.

While it's here, the warmth and light recharge me - the weeks of rain and dark storms have been taking a toll on my emotions - I had been feeling melancholy and hopeless.

But sunlight and warmth chase away all of that, at least for the moment.

Within an hour the wind has picked up, the clouds have pulled together into a solid greyness with only hints of blue here and there. The birds are still singing in loud chorus but the next storm is closing in -

gibson ranch

Mar 21, 2006
Gibson Ranch
Puffy clouds, broken sunshine
cool wind but warm in the sun
lots of birds - a pair of black cormorants hang out for a while, black birds talk alot to each other, plenty of geese along the pond - jays squawk in the distance, songbirds fill in the background
