egg hunt

April 19, 2003
Aunt Linda & Uncle Butch's
after lunch egg hunt
warm in the sunshine, breeze makes it cool in the shade

Grass is ankle high - lots of little wildflowers blooming amidst the trees and rock outcroppings. Plenty of birdsong when the kids are quiet...

After the egg hunt the kids wander and play, adults sit and chat. Plenty of oaks here, the late rains have kept the grass green and flowers golden where it hasn't yet been mown.

Wish I could identify birdsongs - I can hear several but they all hide with the kids shouting in the woods - getting later and we should probably head home but the kids are having so much fun...

In their wanderings, the boys have found poison oak. I think it's finally time to wash up and go home.

Driving back it has struck me how new and fresh and amazing the landscape has looked today. Is it the coat of spring green, so brief in the foothills? Maybe the clear quality of April light? Or me?

parking lot

April 17, 2003
4 p.m. parking lot in Natomas
cool - breezy - sunny - cloudy

Pulling out of the parking space, I see this little sparrow in the tiny tree in front of me, puffed up against the breeze. So I stop, pull back in, pull out my camera, open the car door and try to get off a shot.
Meanwhile other movement in the parking lot disturbs the little guy - I hurriedly get of a shot before he flits away - failing in my zone focusing in the process. It takes three tries, the sparrow now long gone, before I get the focus right - that's what I get for using the ProPack instead of the Land camera...
