Sunday afternoon

May 29, 05
front porch/patio garden
Sunday afternoon
warm, clear skies
slight breeze

Boys shooting hoops on the driveway while Scott washes the car. Mocking bird calls out - changing his song so I know that it's him.

Short weeds are springing up between the patio stones, reminding me that I should pull them before they get too tall.

mocking birds

May 2, 05
10:30 a.m. at home
warm, sunny
pale blue sky and sun on the front porch - I feel good in the sun - need to put a bench here.

Mocking bird sings bright and loud then stops so I can hear other birds down the street, then resumes it's varying song. A light breeze rustles the leaves in the big ash tree. Too bad it wasn't planted deeply enough;it's roots are starting to cause problems in the lawn and are headed for the sidewalk, so at some point we will have to take it out. We've talked about replacing it with a sycamore, but it would be a long time before it got as big as the ash is now. A jay pokes around on the lawn, then hops up into the crook of the ash, then farther up into it's branches and disappears.

The roses on the wall along the path leading to the front door wilted a bit last week when I didn't realize it was time to start watering. They start to reach out from the trellis and if I let them go too long, they will snare anyone attempting to pass. Their fragrance alone can snag me as I pass and it's easy to stop and stick my nose in one growing right at my level.

The mocking bird's song suddenly changes, gets louder, and then I hear a competing bird in the distance.

An hour later and the light has changed drastically on my patio made of stepping stones - I can see the movement of the earth by watching the sunlight travel across the yard. What an amazing thing! The mocking bird is still calling out to let us all know this is his territory. Other birds chirp and tweet when he takes a break. Sometimes I can see one flit from branch to branch in the ash tree or dart across overhead. The sun is starting to leave my spot on the porch. Time marches on.
