Antelope Community Park

cool, breezy, cloudy - front coming through but no rain expected
Kids and I tromped all around - looked for lizards but saw no sign - saw mouse holes and followed rabbit trails - Deidre saw a jackrabbit yesterday - wandered and wadered to finally settle on the log that Dee& I sat on first time out - sun teases us for a little while, then hides again.
ground observations: knee high grass with fat leaved plants poking through sometimes - my feet have found a little open hollow where dead leaves lie and a different sort of seedling pokes through
eye level: open view of the surrounding park, really a lovely little piece of wilderness framed by suburban homes & apartments
overhead: branches of an oak - a gold finch flit flits from one branch to another, higher up: a woodpecker black back, white belly, red cap on his head - sip sip and the goldfinch flies away
Wandered some more - back to the lizard log and then followed Dee to "S curve oaks" by the "big Y tree" - beginning to think of mapping this place -
Kids are playing hide & seek in the tall grass - a pair of magpies are building on a nest - there are several trees with large nests I had thought were built by hawks. Did I hear somewhere that hawks build a new nest every year and other birds like crows and magpies appropriate the old abandoned ones?
